Time for change!

on January 26, 2006

Dear diary,

After doing the corporate drone thing for 6 months, its time for change. After this project I will remain working part time.
Since this laptop is rotten as hell, I’m getting a new one.

Next week back to school. I’m in the procedure of switching my major to Software Engineering.
Every thursday I will have Russian class, starting next week. This is good for my language abstraction. (By the way, I’m building an awesome tool for keeping track of and learning new languages, more about this later.)

I was supposed to move to Amsterdam this weekend, but the construction of my container has been delayed. (baaaka)
The delay is one month, which is OK, because it will take 3 weeks for my bed to arrive.

on January 20, 2006

A lot of people tell me they’re looking forward to the spring season. I agree.
I also look forward to the thunderstorms in spring, they’re refreshing.
Meanwhile, we have to face reality. Winter has only just started and a cold-front is coming up from Russia.

this is winter, which nonetheless brings its own delights.

I intend to do some ice-skating and more snowboarding.

Yesterday I spent a few hours preparing this envelope:

This is not me, this is a friend of mine laying on my couch :]
This image really shows how I spent this day though.
I hope my bird-flu is over tomorrow :]

It was time for some drinking and culture!
With some people I went to the open-mic night at Crea in Amsterdam:

The night got later and later and stranger and stranger:

openoffice weekend

on January 09, 2006

Ok, some tech/IT updates.

GNOME stuff
For all you using GNOME/Linux, if you’re oldskool and cool, you’ve used blackbox/hackedbox/openbox/fluxbox/windowmaker. These window managers have the alt+rightmouse resize trick. In GNOME this is: alt+middlemouse / alt+bothmouse, THIS IS GREAT! thanks aczid!
If you want to use GNOME and japanese input, I’ve come across this thing. It’s a good substitute for kinput2

Samsung toys
I already liked the D600 phone and was planning to buy it. But there are some nice new phones coming in from korea, like this SPH-2300 (left).
Samsung is getting more and more popular everyday I notice. This could be because of the stylish products and advertising, but the technology seems nice as well! The D600 with its tv-out and MPEG4 is already an old model now! And what about this HDSDPA R&D (HDSPA = 3.5G mobile connectivity).
Another example is this neat portable beamer. This beamer was already expected, because of the constantly improving LED technologies. Samsung is one of the first to make a commercial product out of it I think.

‘So what about the stock market?’

The other korean company LG has similar data

I don’t know much about stocks, but this is OK right? In a month I will get into it a little. I’m not planning to waste too much time on it though.

back from venezia

Hey everyone!
I had a great time in Venezia/Venice/Venetie/ベネチア!
I spend the 2005-2006 year change here.
I found my rest, found my creapy alleys, found my champagne-bottle throwing fun. I enjoyed the wine and lasagna as well.
Too bad the weather went bad at some point.
